Medicare Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
What Is Part D?
Part D provides Medicare prescription drug coverage through private plans—either standalone PDPs or included with many Medicare Advantage plans. While optional, enrolling is important if you don’t have other creditable drug coverage, so you avoid penalties later in New York or anywhere you travel.
How Part D Plans Work
Every plan has a formulary (drug list) and tiers that affect costs. Preferred pharmacies can lower your copays around Long Island, the Bronx, or Westchester. Premiums, deductibles, and copays vary, and you may encounter a coverage gap (“donut hole”), which Gail will explain in plain language.
Enrolling in Part D
You can first enroll when you’re new to Medicare, and you can review or switch during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7). Because formularies and pharmacy networks change, it’s smart to recheck your medications each fall whether you’re in Queens, Brooklyn, or Nassau.
Choosing a Prescription Plan
Confirm your medications are on the plan’s formulary, compare costs at your local pharmacy, and weigh premiums vs. copays. Gail Siemer Insurance runs comparisons tailored to your medication list and preferred pharmacies—from Park Slope to Port Jefferson.
Part D in New York
New Yorkers can choose from numerous Part D options offered by major carriers. If you qualify for Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy), your premiums and copays may be reduced—Gail can point you in the right direction and coordinate next steps.
